KIDS CORNER

Why vitamins are important for a child’s health.

As a parent of 2 young children and a doctor, I know how vital it is for children to get the right levels of nutrition to help support their growing bodies and minds. I also know first hand, that this is sometimes easier said than done. Children can have a mind of their own when it comes to eating a nutritionally balanced diet that provides all the key vitamins and minerals that they need. So, I decided to do something about it.

The result? A doctor formulated, easy-to-use multivitamin spray containing vitamins A,C, D, E, B vitamins, Zinc and Iodine. It's everything a growing child needs without the bad stuff like sugar, fillers, binders or gelatin.

My kids love it, I hope yours do too!

HERE'S WHY VITAMINS ARE ESSENTIAL…

Vitamins are essential nutrients that your body needs in small amounts so that it can work properly. In children, adequate intake of vitamins are particularly important to help support normal growth and development.

Most of the time, we get the necessary vitamins we need from eating a healthy balanced diet, however for growing children it may be difficult to get all the vitamins needed through diet alone. If essential vitamins are missing from the diet for prolonged periods of time, it can result in deficiency diseases and/or poor growth.

VITAMIN D3

Essential for the development of bones, teeth, skin, to support the immune system. Chronic deficiency can lead to Rickets.

VITAMIN A

Supports the immune system, vision (especially in dim light), and it is important for healthy skin

VITAMIN C

Important for a child's general health and their immune system. It can also help their body absorb iron.

VITAMIN E

Boosts the immune system and helps the body fight germs. Also promotes blood flow and helps cells work together to perform many body functions.

VITAMIN B6

Is vital to the development and functioning of the brain and nervous system.

FOLIC ACID

It is necessary for growth and repair of every cell in the body. This includes red blood cells, hair, skin, and nails

VITAMIN B12

Important in processes of essential enzymes, the nervous system and red blood cells. Chronic deficiency can lead to anaemia, nerve damage and neurological disorders.

PANTOTHENIC ACID

Important for bodies to properly use carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids and for healthy skin.

IODINE

Important for the production of thyroid hormone and bone and brain development. Deficiency can lead to development problems of the brain and nervous system.

ZINC

Helps support the immune system, DNA and help in normal growth and development. Deficiency can lead to slow growth, can cause hair loss, diarrhoea, eye and skin sores and loss of appetite.

FAQs

1. Can vitamins be harmful to children?

Having too much of some vitamins can be harmful. Keep to the recommended dose stated on the label, and be careful not to give your child two supplements at the same time. For example, don't give them cod liver oil and vitamin drops, as cod liver oil also contains vitamins A and D.

2. Can I give my child more than 1 type of vitamin supplement

Some supplements that can be bought over the counter in pharmacies contain other vitamins or ingredients. Talk to your pharmacist about which supplement would be most suitable for your child. See 1 for further information
